In compliance with the directives of the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Chief (Barr.) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, GSSRS, POS Africa, on measures to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, the Executive Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. David Rogers Irimagha has directed that the General Hospital, Bonny be designated as an Isolation Centre in case of any outbreak of the pandemic in Bonny. Hon. Irimagha gave the directive today when he visited the facility accompanied by his Vice, Hon. Anengi Barasua, Secretary to the Local Government Council, Hon. Omoni Longjohn, Special Adviser on Environment, Prince Oko-Jumbo, after a meeting with stakeholders in the area. These include the Divisional Police Officers of Bonny, CSP Shu’aib Achigili, and Finima, CSP Bashir Kontagora, Commanding Officer of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Nigeria Navy, Bonny, Navy Capt. Tahir Stanley Ngada, represented by Sub. Lt. Philip Ojediran, representatives of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), Mr. Godson Dienye, and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Dr Increase Orawari, and representatives of other security agencies in Bonny LGA. Others were Health Officials, , Executives of the Bonny Marine transport Association (BMTA) and Bonny Boat Drivers Union, Bonny Seafarers Union, bus and commercial motorcycles sections of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and Commercial Tricycle Operators, among others. The essence of the meeting was to discuss possible means of checkmating the infiltration of the COVID-19 virus into Bonny LGA. At the meeting it was disclosed that sixty seven personnel of the Nigeria Red Cross Society, five Environmental Sanitation Officers, three Public Health Officers, and two officials of the Bonny Maritime Transport Association (BMTA) have undergone specialized training on how to mount the screening machine at strategic points. These strategic points which were mapped out to carry out the screening exercise, include Bonny Coal Beach, Primary Healthcare Centres in Bonny and Finima, General Hospital, Bonny, Coconut Estate Waterfront, Dappa-Posie Jetty, Finima Landing Jetty, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Jetty, Bonny and Finima Police Stations. Briefing the meeting, the Commanding Officer of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Nigeria Navy, Bonny, Navy Capt. Tahir Stanley Ngada, represented by Sub. Lt. Philip Ojediran informed that, in compliance with the national emergency contingency plan and the Rivers State Governor’s directive, there was ongoing restriction of incoming and outgoing vessels and personnel along the Bonny waterways. Representatives of SPDC, Dr Increase Orawari, and NLNG, Mr. Godson Dienye, pledged the full cooperation of their companies to partner with the relevant authorities on measures to ensure that everyone is safe from the COVID-19 pandemic.
